Tucked away in a maze of streets in San Marco is The Fortuny Museum. Housed in an imposing 15th century palazzo it is said to be one of the oldest and grandest in the city. Mariano Fortuny was attracted by the splendour of the building and established it as his home and work space from 1899. The cavernous spaces provide a perfect backdrop for his textiles, stage sets and extensive collections of artefacts. Visitors are so few, they are outnumbered by staff, so there is a feeling of having the place to yourself. My take-away is the use of hanging fabric panels to divide large interior spaces…
